The islands are significant historically due to their position and prospects that have shown the presence of rich natural resources. In comparison to the EEZ owned by former colonial powers in the region, the islands are insignificant but have recently sparked fierce exchanges (Leszek, Sazlan, 2007). China intends to increase its EEZ, claims that the islands are part of its continental shelf, and has evidence of long use. These reasons according to the UNCLOS support the chinas ownership of the islands. Japan, on the other hand, claims that the islands are within 370km of its territory, had occupied the islands since the colonial period, and experienced no dispute from china when it first claimed the ownership of the islands (Liao, 2008). The uncertainty of the territorial boundary surrounding these islands originates from the failure of colonialists to outline clearly where the islands belong.Factors surrounding the dispute on the isla nds include failure to resolve the longstanding conflict, the current significance of the islands in regard to state sovereignty, pride, and natural resources. While china claims that the islands are within her continental shelf, Japan is mobilizing her citizens and using all the possible avenues to claim back the islands insisting that they are not subject to negotiations with either China or Japan (Liao, 2008). Japan further asserts that the islands were not ceded to her as spoils of war, but as her rightful possessions and she exercised administrative control over them as an intrinsic territory. China has pointed out with evidence that she has used the island over a long time of the Ming and even Qings dynasties as part of the Ryukyu chain of islands. According to the UNCLOS, both countries have merited to be awarded the islands resulting in a very cumbersome conflict (Liao, 2008). The people of Okinawa argue that the more the issue escalates, the more they get uncomfortable for a repeat of the war witnessed in the Second World War. The people of Okinawa will, therefore, like to witness a permanent resolution of the conflict rather than the involvement of the military (Zhongqi, 2007). Okinawa people have struggled for demilitarization in the region; therefore, they are disappointed with the concern accorded to minerals and resources instead of the needs of the community. The Western does not want to come clear in support of Japan over the dispute while accusing China of trying to expand its overseas bases to gain control over the purported natural resources in the disputed islands (Mitter, 2013). The assertion of the Western countries is hypocritical considering that they possess an enormous proportion of the EEZ in total, and did not bother to outline a clear boundary in the islands. The USA is suspected of failing to demarcate the islands intentionally in order to continue keeping its naval forces in the region. The tension between Japan and China is also to blindfold the world not to realize the vast amount of EEZ owned by western countries overseas acquired during the Wests colonization Asia-Pacific region. USA has benefited from the conflict because Japan will depend on the US for defense in case she is attacked by China over the islands enabling the USA to continue keeping its forces in the region and forcing Japan to abide by the previous agreements (Yann-Huei, 2005).Japan is perceived to be reading the international law carefully due to its self entitlement of the islands. However, China has a valid claim on the basis of both geography and history of the islands (NOLAN, 2013). Despite the international laws contradicting in the dispute, colonialism records, imperialism, and to some extent previous wars in the region has been held responsible for the dispute. As such there is no international law to adjudicate over the matter because the UNCLOS laws provides the countries with the option to safeguard the territory, and no single state involved in the conflict is prepared to come out of the resolution without gains (Tsuruta, 2009). Therefore, Japan and China are unlikely to seek arbitration from the international laws, which reflect dominant global power. The conflict has several associated consequences affecting Japan and China mostly. The dispute has shown ineffectiveness the UNCLOS in dispute resolution. The rules and international laws are designed to promote relations in global power and express the interest of global powers instead of conflict resolution. In a nutshell, the UNCLOS principles have failed to adjudicate conflicting claims in order to provide an amicable solution to the issue (Hagstrà ¶m, 2005). No state is ready to sign an agreement without benefiting from the islands in contention resulting in a procrastinated conflict for decades. The attitude makes it also difficult to find any solution to the problem, despite the fact that the islands are not inhabited by people, no economic a ctivities have been established, and the shared economic interests between China and Japan (Peterson, 2009). The natural resources purported to exist in the area, which have not been confirmed, cannot be exploited amidst the hostility from other parties as it will be an extreme risk taking due to the possibility of war erupting. For Japan, the exploitation will not be cost effective due to the fact that it is economically viable to transport the natural resources to the continental China rather than to Japan through the Ryukyu trench (Hagstrà ¶m, 2005). These consequences necessitate a cooperation of both financial groups and governments of Taiwan, China, and Japan to negotiate an agreement that will ensure peaceful coexistence and economic viability despite the political considerations causing the conflict to worsen.The dispute has resulted in mistrust, in the region. From ancient Greek epics to modern television programs, the theme of what it means to be a man has been developed repeatedly, with some of the core ideals remaining the same and others changing with modern societal perceptions. While the idea of activity over passivity persists as an accepted and ideal trait of masculinity, the ideal that men must be dominant over women to match the portrait of â€Å"the ideal man† has been displaced. Through examination of both Homer’s epic poem the Odyssey and the Netflix television production House of Cards these ideals of masculinity, who assigns them, and their evolution or lack thereof can be explored and determined. This analysis reveals that while activity is an enduring trait of the masculine ideal, the idea that men need to be dominant over women has been, for the most part, eradicated from the portrait of â€Å"the ideal man† by modern society. The term â€Å"Earnings Management† is a form of â€Å"number smoothing† used by a company’s management to manipulate or influence the companys earnings to match a pre-determined dollar amount. This is done in an attempt to keep financials stable, as opposed to showing financial fluctuations. When a company appears to be stable it has a greater chance of attracting investors, which in turn demands higher share prices. When a company is able to have higher share prices, the more likely they are to draw new investors. Likewise, a company that has low share prices is often a reflection of a company that is not doing well financially (Investopedia, 2009, para 2). Often, companies perform abusive earnings management practices in an effort to â€Å"make the numbers† (Inevestopedia, 2009, para 4). In order to do this, management may be tempted to â€Å"make up† numbers as a means of drawing investors or to make their company appear financially stronger tha n what it actually is. The methods used in earnings management can be varied, and may be done through manipulation of financial numbers or operating procedures (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 84). In a study conducted by the National Association of Accountants, a questionnaire was prepared which described 13 observed earnings management situations (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 83). Below are five listed generalizations that can be made by the study findings regarding short-term earnings management practices. 1. Respondents of the survey felt that earnings management practices utilizing accounting methods to be less acceptable than methods of operating procedure manipulation (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 84). Manipulation of operations can include something as simple as pushing shipping to the last day of the fiscal quarter or asking customers to take early delivery of goods (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 85). Another example is when companies make â€Å"Unusually  attractive terms to customers† or â€Å"Deferring necessary expenditures to a subsequent year† (Rosenzweig Fischer, 1994, para 5). According to survey responses, practitioners had fewer ethical dilemmas when using operational earnings management tactics compared to those involving accounting methods (Rosenzweig Fischer, 1994, para 7). 2. When it came to accounting, survey respondents felt that increasing earnings reports to be less acceptable than the decreasing of earnings reports (As quoted by Gibson, pg. 84). Managers appear to be more comfortable in reducing the overall company profit when reserves show elevated numbers (As cited by Gibson, p. 85). It would seem that management might assume that if their reserve numbers are high, then reducing them to show lessor profitability acceptable. If the money is genuinely there, then what is the harm in reducing the profit amount to meet a designated number? However, when it came to reporting profit increases, managers were hesitant in determining what earnings management methods would be ethical and which would not. 3. Generalization #3 is similar to generalization number two where ethics are concerned. Respondents felt that if earnings management tactics were kept small that it was more acceptable than if the effects were large (As cited by Gibson, p. 84). When manipulations of numbers or operating procedures are kept to smaller changes, managers seem to feel it more justifiable and acceptable. For instance, if management were asked to show an increase of sales by $12,000.00, such manipulations would be more ethical than if asked to increase sales by $120,000.00. Likewise, if production costs were delayed for advertising to meet a quarterly budget it would be more acceptable than if production costs for advertising were delayed to meet the end of year fiscal budget. This also ties in to generalization #4, the time period of the end effect. 4. Time periods play a large part in determining how ethical earnings management practices are. As described above, when asked to alter numbers or operating procedures in an effort to make quarterly forecasts, managers seemed to feel this practice to be more acceptable. When asked to alter numbers or operating procedures for annual reports, however, the line between ethical and questionable is blurred. 47% of respondents to the survey felt that earnings management practices that were made to meet an interim quarterly budget to be ethical, while only 41% felt that such manipulations in order to make an annual budget to be ethically sound (As  cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 85). 5. When asked whether it was acceptable to offer special extended credit terms to customers in an attempt to increase profits, only 43% of survey respondents felt the practice to be ethical. However, when asked if the same end result would be ethical if achieved through ordering overtime to ship as much product as possible at years-end, 74% of respondents felt this manipulation to be ethical (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 85). A staggering 80% of survey respondents felt that selling excess assets as a means of realizing a profit to be ethical, while only 16% felt it would be questionable (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 85). Short-term earnings management procedures, while questionable, are often legal. The alteration of financial information in an attempt to meet budgets or as a way to show profitability is often alluring and an â€Å"easy† way to draw investors. Managers who use earnings management tactics must take into consideration the impact such actions may have with key stakeholders (As cited by Gibson, 2013, p. 86). When numbers are skewed favorably, it gives stakeholders a false sense of security in their investments. Companies who engage in short-term earnings management practices often set themselves up for losses over time. When numbers are adjusted to make a quarterly or yearly dollar amount, chances are the following quarter will find the company in the negative. Such practices are rarely foolproof and care must be taken when making earnings management practice decisions. Focusing on long-term earnings management practices are ultimately more favorable, but in order to be effective management must remain committed to consistent operational procedures. Forecasting the product needs of customers and looking ahead are key strategies for keeping sales income at a consistent level. Waiting until the last minute to offer customers generous credit terms in an effort to boost end of year or quarterly sales is a short-term answer at best. Ralph and jack begin to bicker, trying to rebuild the friendship, they go swimming and it only makes the feelings stronger. Simon is walking alone in the woods helping the little ones. He stumbles upon a beautiful scenery and decides to take it all in and sit down for a while. Response-The boys are already getting irritable with each other and at this point, it could get much worse if they continue on this path. I think that if things do not start changing the group is going to break into smaller ones. They may become rivals. Simon is probably going to be killed if he keeps walking off alone. Chapter 4 Summary-The boys start to get use to the island life. The group starts to get bad visions as they nap or sleep. The little ones are mostly eating fruit and playing all day.The fruit begins to cause stomach ailments. The older boys start to torment the little ones by ruining sand castles and throwing rocks but making sure to miss. Jack obsessed with killing a pig brings some boys into the woods and goes for a hunt. A ship is coming up on the horizon when Ralph looks for the signal fire that the hunters were suppose to keep up and its not there. He becomes enraged, and when the hunters return they are covered in blood and rejoicing. Piggy was whining about the fire when Jack slapped him so roughly that one of the lenses of his glasses shattered. Ralph scolds them again and Jack apologizes to Ralph but to Piggy. The boys eat and Ralph calls a meeting on the beach. Response-The boys are growing hostel towards each other and making enemies amongst themselves. They are slowly loosing sanity and human characteristics. The boys are probably going to begin to argue about the food. I think that at the rate their going it will take less then a week to break them. Chapter 5 Summary-Ralph walks on the beach thinking about many things that a weighing on his mind. The larger boys run into the dark woods over something that might not even exist. Ralph considers giving up leadership but convinced not to by Simon and Piggy. The boys are woken up by the echoing sounds of crying from one of the little ones. Response- The little ones nightmares are getting worse, and some are claiming to have actually see beasts. This is raising emotions and fears in the other boys in the group. The lack of sleep is going to start to get to these boys, and now they have to find the child who is crying.Chapter 6 Summary-The twins are watching the signal fire and they fell asleep and were not aware of the ongoing war above them. The fighter planes have a dogfight and one parachutist being ejected and is killed as he lands being tangled in the tress. When the boys awake, they tend to the fire, the parachutist body cast a ghostly shadow on the ground, and the twins mistake it for a beast. They run back to Ralph and the others and tell theme about what they saw. The boys decide to search the island for monsters. They all go except for piggy and the little ones. Response-In the jungle at night is not a place for anyone much less these boys, as they venture out with fear in their hearts I’m worried something bad is going to happen and the are going to loose a lot of boys. The Effort put into this is just wasted energy. The boys are going to be lost or split up. Possibly even killed or worse murdered. Chapter 7 Summary-Ralph and the other boys are scouting out the island looking for â€Å"Monsters. † They stop to eat in the woods, Ralph is getting down about the way the group it going and Simon cheers him up.They go on another hunt and are reenacting the kill they are pretending one of the boys and they nearly kill him forgetting it is only a game. One of the boys suggest that next time the use a real pig and Jack says lets use a little one instead. Ralph reminds the group it is just a game. Some of them volunteer to go back to tell the others they will be back in the morning. Jack convinces Ralph to go up the mountain with them instead of going back. The boys come across an ape looking shadow and go back to tell the others of the beast.Response-I think that the little ones are becoming a target to the older boys for sick games. I believe that something bad is going to happen to them very soon. I am also worried for Ralph going along with the other two boys considering the circumstances. Chapter 8 Summary-The next morning the boys are all talking about the beast that they claimed to see the night before. Jack tells the other boys about Ralph refusing to climb the mountain because he was scared. He told the rest of the boys they should vote Ralph out of power when the boys reject jack suggestion he become extremely angry.He declared he was leaving and who ever wanted to come was welcome. That night some of the boys snuck away to join jacks group. Jacks group kills a pig and puts its head on a stake for a sacrifice to the â€Å"Beast. † Mean while, Jack’s group raids the beach and Simon, goes back to his place that he admired nature’s beauty and found the pig head. He had a hallucination of the head talking to him and he fainted. Response-I was not surprised at the group splitting but I thought it would be piggy getting mad at Jack. The violence is really starting to set in now especially between Jack and Ralph.I think the two groups are going to start a war for food and territory. The human characteristics and morals are almost completely gone now and other’s sanity is drifting farther and farther. This is going to be a sad ending. Chapter 9 Summary-Simon wakes up with a bloody nose and stumbling, he finds the parachutists and vomits. He cuts down the man to show them it was not a beast but simply the man. All of the other boys are having a feast together, on the pig, they killed previously and Simon walks out of the darkness.Jack is covered in paint like a savage and tells the boys to do a hunting dance. When the boys see Simon they do not recognize him and begin to peruse him, they viciously start to rip him apart with their bare hands and teeth. His cries of pain and desperation do him no good he trips over the rocks and lands on the beach and the boys kill him. The boys run for shelter as the rain pours down it washes away the remains of Simon and the parachutist the see this and run away screaming into the darkness. Response-The savageness of the group has taken over and the real killings begin.I think the longer they are trapped on this island the more vicious these killings will become. Ralph group better be prepared for what is most likely coming next. The insanity is overwhelming and frankly shocking to see just how easily a human mind is ruined. Chapter 10 Summary-The next morning Ralph and piggy wake up bruised and ashamed of the actions from the previous night. Ralph is hysterical about the murder and piggy is trying to convince him nothing has happened. Jacks group truly believe Simon was the beast and ties up a little one and beats him they declare that the beast can take on any form. LAfter on that day Ralph’s group makes a fire and then is attack, he is confused as to why they would have willingly shared the fire but piggy knows why, they stole his glasses and the power to make fire. Response-Seeing as jacks group has attacked Ralph’s I believe vengeance is not very far behind. They have already gone to the lengths what has to say they will not go farther. The violence is probably going to get worse and the groups are going to end up killing each other. Chapter 11 Summary-The boys try to build a fire in the cold and find it is impossible without the glasses.The boys have a meeting and decide to go reason with Jack. When they get to the camp Jack has armed guards waiting and they order him to leave while throwing stones. Then Jack and his hunter come out of the woods and they argue. Jack demands Ralph to leave and Ralph demands to give back piggy’s glasses they break into a fight. Jack yells to his hunters to capture the twins and Ralph attacks again. Jack pushes a large rock down the mountain just missing Ralph but knocking down piggy and sending him to his death.Ralph ran away and Jack began to torture the twins forcing them to join his side. Response-I think Ralph is going to come back and try to kill jack for pay back. The twins with probably rebel within the group and help Ralph fight. I would hope the groups could just get along again to survive the predicament but it looks like only a few boys will survive. Chapter 12 Summary-Ralph hides in the jungle and thinks about all the death and realizes that all visions of civilization is now gone. He stumbles across the pigs’ head the â€Å"Lord of the flies,† just a skull now.He is mortified at the sight and out of anger takes the stick, which the skull was impaled with, as a weapon he plans to use on Jack. That night he goes back and finds the twins guarding the camp and they give him food but refuse to join him. He decides to sleep in a bush but wakes up to jack torturing one of the twins to find out where Ralph was hiding. Then Ralph realized they were trying to smoke him out with the rising flames. He fights his way past jack and some blood-covered hunters they chase him all the way to the beach where he collapses to the ground.Then Ralph looks up to see a naval officer who explained that he saw the flames of the fire. The officer looks at the boys and believes it is just all fun and games until is he told the truth. He is astounded at how quickly the boys, English boys have lost the rules of civilization. The magic if drama Essay Example The magic if drama Paper The magic if drama Paper Constantine Stanislavski is a man whom is a great insperation to all aspiring actors. He believes in a variety of techniques which allows the actor to create total realism and focus on stage. I am now going to talk about the Magic If explaining what it is and how it is important for the actor to under-go. If the Magic If were to be studied successfully then as an actor i should be able to make any character I play believable not just to the audience, but to myself. I am aware of the work of Constantin Stanislavski, but Ive never really looked into detail about his System. Stanislavski believed that acting should not be thought of as imitation but as a process. It isnt a matter of external control, technique, and skillfully reproducing an experience but creating and conveying inner life, a sense of being, not playing. As an actor, I have to create organic links between my own personality and the character I am playing. Although I must believe that I am that character, in that time and in that situation, it must be remembered that I mustnt forget who, as an actor, I really am. To help create any role, Ive always found it helpful to attempt many improvisations. In the System this is known as the magic If. The magic If opens up many possibilities for the actor and can no doubt help them to explore new emotions. But to aid the Magic If is the given circumstance. This is the basis for the actor and the role. The given circumstances are: the story of the play, its facts, (the characters in the play, who they are and their purpose); events, (what happens in the play); time and place of action, conditions of life and finally the actors and directors interpretation; the production, the sets, the costumes, the properties; lighting and sound effects. The most important thing needed to create the realism and Magic If is imagination. But of course the most important thing needed to do all this is my imagination. Stanislavski points out: If you speak any lines, or do anything, mechanically, without fully realising who you are, where you came from, why, what you want, where you are going, and what you will do when you get there, you will be acting without your imagination. Some good techniques to develop the imagination are to prepare the body by relaxation and then being taken on a meditation by some else. This can help create a more power imagination, and if you can hold the images and believe them, it can also help in developing your concentration. To aid the imagination of a character i would be undergoing, I would research into the lifestyle he might have had, what he wore, ate, how he may have entertained himself and possibly different aspects of his personality. Relaxation techniques and meditations can also help in focusing and relaxing an actor on stage. Stanislavski created a devise known as Circles of Attention. This can be shown like ripples on a pond. If the actor is in the centre of the pond, the ripples radiating out from the actor in an increasing circumference will eventual embrace the whole pond, or in this case the whole stage. To begin with, I would create a very small circle around me, focusing on myself and character, what Im wearing and what Im doing. Then I would spread the circle farther away, drawing in nearby objects and props or any characters stood by. Finally I would spread the circle around the stage, focusing on everything there and knowing where everything is. To practice this I would stand in a room and go through the procedure of expanding the circle, and being aware of whats in the room Im in. I would practive this in the Art Centre as it is generally a large room and I would have to emphasise my movements and voice so all 3 sides of the stage could hear/see me. Stanislavski also calls for the use of the Emotion Memory; Just as your visual memory can reconstruct an inner image of some forgotten thing, place or person, your emotion memory can bring back feelings you have already experienced. You would think that this would give a more emotional performance and convince the audience that the character is real. However, the use of your emotional memory with a character may end up with you not acting at all, but saying the words from the text as you bring up all your past emotions. I have just recently worked on the Emotion Memory in a workshop. I was called to bring out an emotion at a time when I was at my saddest. This I did, but I dont think that if I was on stage and my character demanded sadness that I could recall that memory I had. I would forget about the character and end up re-living the past. I think that it is important to remember how you felt at that time, without the reasons for it, and then call that up instead. An example of this would be when my character would have to represent sadness on stage. I would think of when my nan was dying from cancer or when my best friend died to bring the required emotions to my head. This would create more realism and make much more sense to the audience on stage. Happiness is easily shown and I feel that so is the sadness. Anger, though, is something that I dont express very often. Im one of those people who bottles everything up and walks away quietly. This is why, when representing anger, I would have to rely on my body movements and voice. Instead of yelling out the words, I would raise my voice but say them slowly, not projecting as far as I normally would do. Id try not to move my body and maybe raise an arm (to reinforce my power over another character on stage. Stanislavski pointed out that all actors need to have a tempo/rhythm in their acting. This tempo/rhythm needed to be external and internal. For example, the character may be worrying about something and could even be panicking and at the same time is in a room where other characters are talking about something as bizzare as the weather. The inner turmoil tends to be conceiled. ase, by a show of calm. This can lead to an interesting performance as the two tempo/rhythms contradict each other and i believe this creates a stronger visual impact on the audience. The whole System was designed to allow characters to become more indepth and Stanislavski spent many years trying to studying and experimenting with his System. Studying it you can initially see where he was heading, the only problem being the length of time needed to complete the system, with a character. Unfortunatly, we havnt got the required length of time available to us, so it is of great difficulty to fully study and complete Stanislavskis techniques. However, Stanislavskis ideas for realism and naturalism were a great influence on this last century, and parts of the System are still used today in rehearsal time when creating a role. The Magic If has had a great impact on all aspiring actors as it has taught us how to develop our roles to create the most realism possible. Stanislavskis techniques are of great importance as they truly indicate to the actor how to portray their characters role by looking at their personality and studying how they move around stage as a person. In conclusion, the Magic If is very important for all actors as all mainstream actors follow the system and Stanislavski has become a big rolemodel to many because of it.
